Is it worth going to beauty school to get a license as an ethetics/skin care specialist for $6,500?

It can be very worth it and very rewarding. I don't know what state you're in but the price you listed is not unreasonable at all. Just a few things to remember:

Beauty school is going to teach you the basics-everything you need to pass your state boards (written and practical exams)

Going to work for yourself right out of school can be an expensive proposition so keep your eye out for equipment as you go along. If working for yourself as a contractor is what you want to do, look for bargains in equipment and training materials wherever you can - esthetic shows, ebay, used equipment, etc.

You will learn MOST of your skin care once you're out of school. I can't stress this enough. Continuing education is not only required by many states it's almost imperative to becoming a successful esthetician. Technology and chemistry in esthetics is changing so fast and the public is very aware of every little buzz word so you really need to stay up on new technologies if not to use, them, at least to be able to talk intelligibly about them.

Know that coming out of school everyone with a skin care line or new fangled piece of equipment will hound you for a sale. Start fairly basic out of school and research your products and equipment well.

There's lots of $$$ in Facial/Body Esthetics and it can be a very rewarding career. It's also a little scary in such a litigeous society so practice, practice in school even though it tends to get boring and you'll want to learn more than they are probably going to teach you. If you can, find a mentor so that when you graduate you have someone to help you with more advanced esthetics or considering going to a CIDESCO school to further your career. Joining the NCA or other like association will help as well. You can get insurance coverage for your business, discounts on equipment, etc.

Where I live, going to work for someone else just out of school pays very little for at least 2 years but after that you can start earning a bit more. It just takes time to build up your skill set, clientelle, and knowledge.

Remember too that you have several avenues that you can take an esthetics license. You can do skin care, go on to medical esthetics, any number of areas...

Good luck to you! I hope you enjoy school (if that's what you choose). I've been in the beauty biz for over 20 years and love it!

Actually, in CO it is more than $6500. It is worth the money....other places could cost considerably more...In the U.K. you have to go to school for 2 years so think how much that could cost you.Is it worth going to beauty school to get a license as an ethetics/skin care specialist for $6,500?
